More about Cystinuria and PCR testing?

Cystinuria is a genetic defect in which the kidney is not able to process a basic amino acid, cystine, correctly. Affected dogs are born with this condition but in most cases it takes many years before things get bad enough that we notice it. Over time, the unprocessed cystine in the urine clumps together to form stones which may block the urinary tract. DNA PCR testing can identify the mutation responsible for cystinuria and provides a very high accuracy test and can be done at any age. It distinguishs not only between affected and clear dogs, but also to identify clinically healthy carriers which is essential information for controlling the disease in the breed as carriers are able to spread the disease in the population and cannot be identified by means of common laboratory diagnostic. If a particular dog turns is identifed as a carrier, it can be still bred to a non-affected animal and the non-carrier puppies can be saved for the next round of breeding.

CTDS co-sponsored the BVZS Spring meeting entitled “Disease Management and Epidemiology” which was held near Gloucester on the 21st and 22nd April 2012.

Around 75 vets and ancillary professionals involved with exotic animals and wildlife met at the Holiday Inn near the wetland and wildfowl trust centre at Slimbridge for the Spring Meeting of BVZS. Papers covered the usual wide range of topics from the epidemiology of TB in badgers through Schmallenberg virus to risk factors in feather plucking African grey parrots.

For vets, nurses and students with an interest in exotics join us for the next meeting at Edinburgh zoo in November with a chance no doubt to meet the pandas. For more information on BVZS see http://www.bvzs.org/

CTDS Exotics (formerly EVDS) is a specialist division of CTDS which provides diagnostic services for pet exotics, zoological collections and wildlife organizations. For practices treating exotics we combine pathologist interpretation with input from our exotics consultant to be able to provide not only diagnostic support but therapeutic guidance.
